You’ll Go Bananas for this Plant Derived Material

November 16, 2020 by Material ConneXion

This material is B-A-N-A-N-A-S… literally!

Head of Research, Dr. Gayatri Keskar, introduces Bananatex®, the world’s first waterproof durable material derived from sustainably grown banana plant fibers.

The material’s biodegradability makes it a game-changer for industries reliant on plastics and synthetic materials for applications that require water resistance.

Bananatex® is a perfect fit for bags, shoes, wristbands, and furniture.

The harvested Abacá fibers are transformed into yarn in a Taiwanese paper mill and dyed using a method that is more sustainable than the typical roll dying alternative. And the optional natural beeswax coating gives it a smooth, water-resistant finish and a supple hand feel.

This textile is fully biodegradable and can replace the technical plastic materials dominating the outdoor industry. An added bonus? The self-sufficiency of this plant has made it an important contributor to the reforestation of areas once eroded by Palm plantations while enhancing the prosperity of local farmers.

These innovations, as well at 10,000+ others, are accessible through Material Library and the online database. Learn more about the resources and tools available through membership →
