Spalted wood figuring is found on wood veneers and planks that have been discolored due to a fungi infestation.
Spalted wood will have discoloration in its pigment and, depending on the wood type, may also have zone lines and white rot. Zone lines are single or doubled dark, almost black, lines that follow the grain of wood and show the fungi decay pattern that was within the tree. White rot refers to light colored, almost bleached out, areas that are usually found within the zone lines.
While spalted wood is essentially wood with decaying areas, if it is caught and stabilized at the right time, it can result in uniquely marked veneers and planks.
