From a bent glass technology that uses lasers to create new geometries from sheet glass to a premier wood substitute with the smallest ecological footprint of any lumber alternative, Material Library and Online Database continue to grow. Check out the Top Five Material additions for April!
MC 492210 / SABIC LNP™ ELCRIN™ iQ Solutions from SABIC Innovative Plastics (Formerly GE Plastics)
This proprietary technology from SABIC depolymerizes single-use PET plastic into a polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) polymer with reduced carbon and energy footprint. It can be compounded to offer improved performance such as high heat resistance, flame retardancy, improved UV and wear resistance and special color transparency. Applications include cosmetic packaging and consumer electronics.
MC 836801 / Bent glass from Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM
Bent glass is a new cost-effective technique that can bend sheet glass into complex or unconventional shapes with the help of laser beams, offering a new range of products for architects and designers. It allows geometries which were previously too costly to manufacture. All types of standard glass materials can be processed, such as soda lime, aluminosilicate (Gorilla®) or borosilicate.
MC 969902 / Sustainable Spray Piece Dyeing from Paradise Textiles Limited
This unique, high-speed spray dyeing technology enables high quality output at considerably reduced costs and environmental footprint for different textiles. Compared to conventional jet dyeing, it results in significantly reduced consumption of water by 91%, chemicals by 94%, dye by 7%, and energy by 92%. Applications include apparel, footwear, home textiles, accessories, etc.
MC 1129601 / HempWood from Fibonacci
Made in the USA, HempWood is an engineered premier wood substitute with the smallest ecological footprint of any lumber alternative. It consists of 85% Hemp, 10% Soy, and 5% organic binder. The material has a 4 month grow cycle, but it performs similar to 200 yr old tropical hardwood while preventing deforestation. Applications include flooring, counter tops and hobby woods.
MC 1144701 / DuraPET PCR from PolyVisions
DuraPET PCR are Recycled PET-based engineered plastics that are a drop-in replacement for less recycled ABS, polycarbonate, and PC/ABS alloys. The material is a reactive graft compound made from 91% traceable PCR-grade PET. It offers similar tensile strength and modulus properties & superior impact resistance from proprietary soft segment graft co-polymer. Applications include consumer electronics.
